that time in 2012 i did a practical dissertation for university on Grindr…

Grindr Culture: A look at cultural assumptions on gay society and new technologies role in it.

With the growing acceptance and popularity of the notion of an online community and its enfaces on not separating but bringing people together, this research project will focus its findings on an exploration of the cultural assumptions on gay society and gay online dating with a case study on the new application for mobile phones; Grindr, also encompassing Gaydar, an online gay dating website, with views from users and spectators on it. There has been research on online dating in the gay community focusing on websites such as gaydar.com and gay.com but none any in depth about Grindr because of its relatively new (launched March 2009) existence. This exploration will show, if there is one, a change in the behaviour of online dating or ‘mobile dating’ since the introduction of Grindr and its effect on society; both the accumulated gay community and the society that surrounds it. Whether it has created extreme opinions, perpetuated stereotypes or had no effect at all. Questions such as; in today’s society is it more acceptable to use these websites and applications? is it more acceptable to use them to find one night stands, is the one night stand becoming more acceptable? Are we lowering standards by signing up to them, are we selling yourself,  This research will explore the social engagements associated with Grindr, in comparison to other dating websites such as Gaydar, together with the further extension of its trajectory ‘beyond the web’; i.e. its perceived state in society. Grindr was launched in March 2009 by Joel Simkhai after years of trying to design a location based social networking application, his pioneering technology was the first to incorporate GPS into ‘online’ dating and now has more than 1.65 million regular users in 180 countries worldwide. Simkhai described the app as “a compelling new global platform that fundamentally changes and improves the way we meet new people.” Sharif Mowlabocus’ work will be a primary reference source and starting point for this research project which could be seen as a continuation of his work.
